Pre-Assessment Consultation.

Not sure where to start?
We’ve got you!

Our consultation appointment is designed to help you gain clarity. It’s an opportunity to sit down with one of our psychologists to talk through your concerns, observations and goals for your child.

During the session, we gather relevant background information and begin building a clear picture of what may be going on. By the end of the appointment, we will recommend a tailored assessment plan - or discuss alternative pathways if another approach may be more suitable - so you feel confident about the next steps.

Please note, standard wait times may apply for assessment bookings, following a consultation appointment.

There is no one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to children and many parents feel unsure about where to start or what type of assessment their child may need.

This appointment offers an opportunity to seek guidance about the most appropriate path forward when considering an assessment for your child. Through an open discussion with one of our psychologists, we can explore your concerns, your child’s strengths, and the questions you may be hoping an assessment will answer.

Meeting with our psychologist allows time to gather relevant background information specific to your child, while also giving you space to ask questions, raise concerns, and gain a clearer understanding of the assessment process. Our aim is to help you feel informed, supported, and comfortable before moving forward.

Some families also find it helpful to meet our friendly team and experience our welcoming clinic environment before bringing their child in for assessment appointments.

When is a consultation helpful?

On the day.

During your consultation appointment, you will meet with your psychologist, who will ask detailed questions about your child’s developmental, social, behavioural, emotional, health and learning history. This helps us build a thorough understanding of your child’s experiences and current challenges.

We will explore your concerns together and begin forming a clear picture of what may be contributing to the difficulties you’ve noticed. The goal of this session is not to jump to conclusions, but to thoughtfully consider the possibilities and clarify what questions need answering.

By the end of the appointment, we will recommend an assessment plan tailored to your child’s needs, or discuss alternative pathways if another approach may be more appropriate.

If more convenient, we are also happy to offer the consultation virtually.

Attendance.

Parents or caregivers usually come along this appointment on their own, although you are very welcome to bring your child if you would like to.

What to bring.

Nothing is required for the initial consultation; however, bringing along any relevant documents can be helpful.

For example, if your concerns relate to school, recent school reports or feedback from teachers may assist. If there are developmental or autism-related concerns, previous reports from health professionals, early childhood educators, or information from your child’s baby book can provide useful background.
