This comprehensive assessment explores attention, impulse control, behaviour, executive functioning and other features commonly associated with ADHD.
Information is gathered across multiple settings and sources, combining direct assessment tasks, clinical observations, developmental history, and parent and teacher questionnaires to build a well-rounded understanding of your child’s strengths, difficulties and everyday functioning.
What does a typical ADHD assessment involve?
Our ADHD assessment includes direct assessment with your child using standardised tasks designed to explore areas such as attention, inhibition, cognitive flexibility and executive functioning. The psychologist also makes clinical observations throughout the assessment and adapts the process to your child’s age and presentation.
Standardised questionnaires are completed by parents and teachers to understand how attention, impulsivity, hyperactivity and executive functioning present across different environments. Additional measures of executive functioning or everyday behaviour may also be included where clinically relevant.
The psychologist brings together direct assessment results, clinical observations, questionnaires and background information to develop a comprehensive understanding of your child’s ADHD profile. This supports an evidence-based diagnostic conclusion and practical, individualised recommendations for home, school and everyday life.

ADHD Presentations.
ADHD is a single diagnosis, but it does not look the same in every child. Clinicians recognise three different presentations, all of which sit under the umbrella of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
Inattentive
Children with this presentation primarily experience difficulties with attention and organisation. They may appear easily distracted, forgetful, slow to complete tasks, or struggle to follow multi-step instructions. These children are not necessarily hyperactive and are sometimes described as “daydreamy” or quietly disengaged. This presentation can be overlooked, particularly in girls.
Hyperactive
This presentation is characterised by high levels of physical restlessness and impulsivity. Children may find it difficult to sit still, wait their turn, or think before acting. They may interrupt others, blurt out answers, or struggle with emotional regulation. Hyperactivity can look different depending on age and environment.
Combined
Combined presentation involves features of both inattentive and hyperactive/impulsive patterns. Children may experience difficulties with sustained attention as well as impulsivity and restlessness. This is the most commonly diagnosed presentation.
What happens after the ADHD assessment?
Following your feedback appointment, you will receive a comprehensive written report (usually within 8 weeks) outlining clinical observations, questionnaire results, and the diagnostic opinion where applicable.
The report is designed to provide clarity and practical next steps. It includes a summary of your child’s strengths, areas of difficulty, and tailored recommendations to support home, school, and everyday functioning.
Where a diagnosis is made, the report can be shared with your child’s Paediatrician or GP to assist with treatment planning, including discussion of medication options if appropriate. It may also be provided to your child’s school and any allied health professionals involved in their care to support coordinated and informed intervention.
What if the results don’t clearly indicate ADHD?
Not all attention or behavioural concerns are caused by ADHD. If the assessment findings do not meet diagnostic criteria, we will explain what may be contributing to your child’s difficulties and provide practical recommendations. This may include strategies for home and school, or suggestions for further assessment where appropriate.
Should my child take their usual medication before attending the assessment?
In most cases, we recommend that your child takes their medication as prescribed on the day of the assessment. This allows us to understand how they are currently functioning in their typical day-to-day setting.

Can psychologists prescribe ADHD medication?
Psychologists are trained to assess and diagnose ADHD; however, we do not prescribe medication. If medication is being considered, this is discussed with a Paediatrician or Psychiatrist, who can review the assessment findings and determine whether medication is appropriate.
A note on assessment inclusions.
Transparent costs matter to us, and we aim to make pricing clear from the outset. In most cases, the quoted fee includes all components needed to complete the assessment.
Occasionally, additional areas of concern may become clearer as we gather information. If the psychologist believes further testing would be helpful to ensure an accurate and thorough understanding, we’ll talk this through with you first. Any additional recommendations and associated fees (if applicable) will always be discussed with you upfront, so you can decide whether you’d like to proceed.
